The TAG Executive (Chair Andrew Woodward, Treasurer Andrew Scotford and MD Andrew Leontarou) and a strong University of Sydney Union team represented Australia recently at the ACUI (Association of College Unions International) Annual Conference in Philadelphia
This year's conference of 1200 delegates from 550 member institutions was heavily focused on the concepts of inclusivity and diversity, two issues that are growing in importance more and more rapidly there, as they also are on Australian campuses. But there was much more on the comprehensive program than just that, with some great keynotes, interesting and informative special interest sessions, dinners, networking and tours of some truly amazing universities,
Our ties to ACUI go back a long way, in fact ACUMA began as Region 16 of ACUI before becoming an independent Australian association. From ACUMA was born ACUMA Buying, which became Tertiary Access Group, and the rest is, as they say, history.
Discussions are underway between TAG and ACUI as to how best offer reciprocal benefits to our respective memberships, potentially beginning with discounted registrations to each other's conferences. Despite there being great differences between the American and Australian campus models, there is still very much to be learned from our colleagues there, and opportunities exist there for us to think outside the box in regards to student life.
